After a long break from their first match, the Stars were up against the Conquerors at the LGCC home ground for what promised to be a cracker of a game

Nabil Khalid opted to chase again after winning the toss, considering their good form with this strategy.

The openers Saqib and Talha from the stars wanted to assert their authority in the game with text book cricketing shots within the powerplay. Both Talha and Saqib were finding gaps with ease and pinching singles from within the circle. A much needed breakthrough was provided by Naghman Masood in the 5th over having had Talha finally caught at point. Naghman followed up with the wicket of the other opener Saqib (25 off 25) in his next over too with the score now at 48-2 post powerplay. Captain Harawal Wassam knew that the Stars needed to build a partnership alongside the strong middle order batsman Khurram Goraya.

With a partnership building for the 3rd wicket (28 runs in 24 balls), Harawal holed out at long-on on a delivery that should have been put away with the score now at 76-3 in 11 overs. A big wicket in the context of the game as the door was slightly opened for the Conquerors as Harris Usman swept in with two back to back wickets of Tehseen and Rizwan. Rana Waleed had no intentions of blocking out a hattrick ball and displayed his intent right from the first ball he faced. Fortune would favour the brave as Rana Waleed swung his bat without fear and picked up 4 boundaries in the 9 balls he faced and shifting the momentum back with the batting side. Khurram who had been kept in check up to most part of his innings finally broke through as well swatting Atta’s final over for a thumping 23 runs, the Stars were back on to score a good total at the 17th over mark with the score now at 141-7, with Khurram finally out having scored a brilliant 58 off 36 balls (161 strike rate). Abid and Naghman provided two reasonably economical overs in the 18th and 19th over , however Talha Qamar closed out the innings with some brilliant innovative shots and a thumping six at deep midwicket, adding 14 crucial runs and pushing the teams total to 167-9.

The Stars were brilliant in maximising their total, having used the depth available to them in their batting. It was now time to defend the total set against the Conqueror who knew this total was within their reach, especially after their epic chase against the Knights.

The two young openers, Bilal and Munaf, were in the mood to score runs fast and entertain as well in the process as both players got the Conquerors of to a flier! The openers raced to 53 in 32 balls, and the partnership was finally broken by some smart bowling by Sikander Jajja as Munaf had to depart, having scored 25 off 16, scoring 6 exquisite strokes to the boundary. Nabil who has been in sublime form with the bat provided some support to Bilal who continued in his calypso style of elegant leg side shots that were a delight to watch. Bilal was on the verge of producing a memorable knock in the chase, but the fighting spirit of Sikander once again became the hurdle as Bilal also fell to him, having made a delightful 40 off 26 balls (153 strike rate), and the score now at 2-75 in 7.5 overs.

The required run rate was within the reach of the Conquerors from this point, and the Stars still needed to take wickets to somehow claw back into this game. Sikander who was in the process of bowling a fine spell for his team delivered another big blow to the Conquerors having now prized out the big wicket of Abid Ahmed with the score at 90-3 in 11 overs, as Abid is a well known technician in clinical run chases. Sikander’s spell of 3-26 was pivotal in halting the chase for the Stars, and Harawal now decided to play another card up his sleeve in the tricky left arm spin of Ehsan ul Haye. The left arm mystery spinner proved to be a difficult challenge as he was successful in removing the tournament’s leading run scorer Nabil Khalid for 10 runs and the score now at 99-4 in 13 overs.

The burden of responsibility now fell on the dangerous Haris Usman to finish this game off for his side, but Harris was complimented by the bludgeoning striking style of Ansar Iqbal who blasted his way to a quick 28 off 16 (hitting 2 monstrous sixes in the process). Ehsan provided a vital wicket for his side, having had Harris caught for 12 runs off 8 balls and the score now at 124-5 in 15 overs. 48 runs were needed in the last 5 overs, and the Conquerors were fast running out of their main finishers.

It was down to the lower order for the conquerors to get these runs. In the lead up to the final over of the match, some good captaincy and field placements by Harawal meant that the Conquerors who at one point were well on course to chase the total now needed 18 runs of the final over with no recognisable batsman to chase the score. Harawal put his trust in Rizwan Ahmed to close this innings out for him. His opponent Mohsaf Gondal at the crease had to believe that he can pull this off for the Conquerors After a dot ball on the first ball of the 20th over, Mohsaf watched the ball closely right to the end and pulled the trigger clubbing the next 3 balls for 1 six and 2 fours! 4 runs were needed now off 2 balls, the pressure was right back on the Stars, and it seemed as if the stars were now aligning once again for a famous Conquer’s victory. Mohsaf once again middled the ball on the 5th ball, the shotgun sound of the hit meant that nobody from the Conqueror’s even bothered to see where the ball had gone, because the ball had six written all over it as soon as it was struck! The game was over, Mohsaf was the hero, the Conqueror’s camp were on cloud 9 having pulled off one of the greatest last over chases in the league’s history!

Although there were some brilliant individual performances from both sides, however there is no denying that the Conqueror’s owe this victory to the fantastic individual effort of Mohsaf Gondal who struck 25 off 10 balls and ensuring 18 runs were chased in the last over! The deserved MOTM was Mohsaf indeed. The Conqueror’s have now won 3 out of 3, and they are also displaying extreme mental strength and courage as a part of their winning success!
