The rescheduled fixture between the Conquerors and Strikers took place at the LGCC venue on a warm Thursday evening
Looking to change from their usual strategy of chasing, the Conquerors opted to bat first after winning the toss.
The opening pair of Bilal and Munaf once again threatened to cause a lot of damage in the powerplay, as the MC raced to 25 in the first 3 overs. A bit of overexcitement by the pair meant that Bilal Muhammad who was looking in scintillating touch for his 19 off 12 had to return to the pavilion after a needless run out, allowing the Strikers to gain some grip in the match. Captain Nabil joined Munaf at the crease, and the pair continued to push the score at a good rate.
Shakir came to bowl in the 7th over and was immediately successful in removing his opposite captain Nabil for 14 (18 balls). Shakir’s spell was pivotal and full of action, as Shakir was later successful in removing Munaf in his following over, and his third over also produced the run out of Imran Mane. With the run rate not too alarming, the wickets column was piling up for the conquerors who needed a partnership at the crease.
Ansar Iqbal continued to strike the ball with vengeance and added a valuable 27 off 22, whilst the dangerous Haris Usman also provided some tenacity to the score with a contribution of 20 off 16. With the score at 123-7 in 17 overs, the strikers required a strong finish in order to produce a challenging total. Mohsaf was once again in his belligerent striking form, having put on another brilliant 38 run partnership with Atta propelling the total to 161-7 after the 20. Vital runs and sensational hitting once again by the veteran all-rounder!
The Stikers made a great start to the chase themselves, with Captain Shakir Ahmed applying early pressure on the conquerors with some delightful strokes while left handed opener Amir Saeed was in the mood to hit the ball hard. With the score at 22-0 by the end of the second over, Shakir’s long strides couldn’t save him this time from strong arm of Anas at long on, as Shakir was run out attempting a second and opening the wickets column for his side. Amir continued to go hard targeting his range at long on and square of the wicket, but Mohsaf’s wicket of Anees Butt and Naghman’s wicket of Qaiser meant that three wickets had now fallen in the powerplay and the pressure was right back on the Strikers who couldn’t afford to lose anymore.
Having played brilliantly for his 40 off 25, some casual running by Amir lead to another run out, and Haris was also successful in prizing out the dangerous wicket of Irfan Ahmed for a paltry 4 off 4 at deep midwicket. Mudassar Doggar, who was on a mission to rescue this for his side with the score at 5-80, was joined by Zeeshan Abdul Ali, a man who has shown a lot of nerve in pressure situations before. Both Mudassar and Zeeshan bravely added a crucial 44 run partnership to take the score to 124-6 in 16.4 overs. The match most certainly wasn’t over, but Muddasser having had two or three chances due to some poor fielding by the Conquerors would know that this was his match to win for his side.
Anas, Harris and Naghman came in to bowl some good overs for their side at this point, but the leaking of the odd boundary and the walloping six by Muddasser on the last ball of the penultimate over meant that the Strikers were 13 runs away from victory. Nabil trusted himself to bowl and defend the total. A reasonably good over up to the last 2 balls meant that the Strikers needed 8 off 2 with Mudassar still at the crease. Pressure meant nothing to a man who had enabled his side to reach this point with his brave approach, and he was rewarded with 2 more sixes off the last two balls and finishing the game for his side in style!
A fantastic chase lead by an inspired Mudassar Dogar who’s match winning 50 provided the Might Strikers with a much needed win. The Conqueror’s who have been winning games on the last ball of matches were this time the ones who suffered the heartbreak. But they would know that catches win matches, and crucial catches were dropped at crucial junctures.
