With qualification already confirmed, the Conquerors were all set to take on the daunting challenge presented by Tahir Kang’s CC side at Cheam CC
The Challengers were eying up a top 2 position with a win. Winning the toss, the Challengers elected to bat first.
Mohsaf and Zeeshan Anjum were on new ball duties against the dangerous Safwan Manzoor. Anything slightly off length was picked up with ease by Safwan who was scoring runs free all around the wicket. Safwan’s power enabled the CC to race to 60-1 in the first six overs, with Safwan scoring a 24 ball 50, a serious worry for the Conquerors who needed to see him gone. The breakthrough came when Anas finally removed Safwan for a well made 61 off 31 (8×4 and 3×6) with Harris Usman taking a well judged catch at long on.
With Safwan gone, the Conquerors breathed a massive sigh of relief and were able to bring on a slower bowler in the form of Sajeel Ahmed. Sajeel’s 4 overs for 19 runs and 1 wicket truly put the breaks on the CC innings, as Harris Usman also produced a fantastic spell of quality death bowling alongside of him.
From 110-2 in 13 overs, the Challengers made sure that they don’t give much away as Naghman, Harris and Anas ensured that they closed the innings out well, as the CC could only add another 47 runs in 7 overs with the loss of 5 more wickets. A job well done by Captain Faizan Warraich who was definitely under the pump when Safwan was threatening to take the game away from his side in the first six overs.
Needing close to 8 an over, the start was brilliant between Bilal and Abid. Both openers ensured runs were scored at a quick pace and found the gaps at ease with quality cricket strokes. Tahir Kang broke through for his side by removing Bilal with the score at 43-1 in the 5th over. Some more economical overs in between by the Challangers mounted some pressure on the Conquerors, as the required run rate was creeping close to 9 runs. Naghman Masood was promoted up the order considering his good hitting form, and a thumping 33 off 16 balls by the bowling all-rounder shifted the momentum back to the chasing side, who now needed a manageable 7 runs per over in the last 6 overs of the match with the score at 107-4 in 14 overs.
Not in the mood to take this match deep, Harris Usman came to the crease with the intention to flat bat the ball out of the park. With Nabil (40* off 31) making sure to hold one end, Harris blasted 25 off 11 to score the remaining runs at a canter and chased the total down with 16 balls to spare! The Conquerors registered their most convincing win out of the 5 matches they have won.
Harris’s 3 dimensional top effort was awarded the MOTM award due to his top class batting, bowling and fielding. With the two sides likely to meet later on at some point in the knock out stages, the Conquerors know that they need a better plan against Safwan too, who nearly stole the show singlehandedly. All in all, a good game of good quality cricket.
